Road Trip Recap Part 1

We're baaaaack! We returned on Friday from our TEN day road trip to Montana, Washington, and Oregon. We had SO much fun and I think this might be my favorite road trip we've taken to date. Hank was a ROCK STAR and rolled with the punches and was just such a good sport. We logged a lot of miles, AJ drove every single one (thanks, babe!), and we saw some of the people we love the most in the world! It was wonderful. I'm thinking it'll take 3 posts to recap this vaycay. Lots of photos coming at ya, you've been warned!

We hit the road bright and early on a Tuesday morning, and after a stop at Starbucks, we were on the highway! We drove about 3 hours to Idaho Falls where our dear friend Kandi recently moved to. It was a great spot to catch up with her, grab a coffee, and let Hank run around a bit. We wish Kandi lived back in the Beehive State, but it was so great to see her.

We love Kandi!

Hank always reminds us to stop and smell the flowers!
We rolled into Helena in the afternoon after a super pretty drive. We were heading through Helena to split up the long drive to Spokane, but mostly to see one of my besties, Katie, and her cute family! Katie and I last saw each other at my wedding but we've maintained frequent communication, chatting on the phone and texting often. She's a friend for life and our sweet kiddos had never met! We needed to rectify that! Katie is SUCH a champ that she had her second baby, a son named Zeke, just 2 days after we were in Helena. But even at the very end of pregnancy, her and her hubby hosted us for a BBQ. It was such a blessing so spend time together and have our babies meet. We hit the road early the next morning (after an amazing snickerdoodle latte at Katie's coffee shop recommendation) to begin our journey to Spokane.
My heart!

We experienced some chilly weather on the way and it was sort of cozy in the car. We were getting hungry around Coeur d'Alene and decided to stop for a bite to eat and to walk around. We ate at a delish burger place and strolled around by the lake. It was SO COLD. I threw Hank's sweatshirt in the car as an afterthought and I was so glad I did. We didn't stay too terribly long as it started to rain. We took cover at this adorable cafe. Then it was less than an hour until Spokane!
Excited to be out of the car!

Many nuggets were consumed on this trip lol

The demise of the nugget

The last time I was in Spokane was for my friend Marie's wedding 6 years ago. Some of my fondest memories are of my time as a Gonzaga student and it was so special to share it with my guys. Hank was out like a light after all that running around in Coeur D'Alene so he and AJ chilled in the car for a bit while I popped into St. Al's where I used to work in college and I got to surprise Miss Marta  We bought some merch, walked the campus, and I acted like an old lady saying things like, "In my day, we had to leave campus to go to Starbucks now they're everywhere!" The campus has changed a lot, but it's enough the same to still be super special.

Our senior year house---it was getting a new roof!

Never thought trudging across this field as a student that ten years later, my hubby and son would be playing chase right here. Full circle....full heart!

One of the FEW Buckys on campus....these kids, privilegd I tell ya.
We checked into our hotel and after chilling for a bit, went to my FAVE college restaurant, Pete's Pizza, for some calzones. They tasted just as delicious as I remembered. We even stopped by the college Safeway and instead of buying junk food and wine like the olden days, we bought some milk for Hank! Haha.
Our room on the river. And we lucked out and got a free suite upgrade. Two rooms for those two nights was amazing!

The next day was a NO TRAVEL day (Yippee!) and a chance to visit with one of my very favorite people, my friend Marie. Stay tuned for more of the adventure!

5 Years

5 years ago today, on a super hot late afternoon on the lawn of The Memorial House at Memory Grove, surrounded by beloved friends and family, AJ and I said "I do" to forever.

I knew that day some of the things that our future might hold. I knew we'd create a life we loved as much as we love each other. I knew that while we are both whole and content as individuals, we became our best versions of ourselves by being together. I knew we'd create a loving home where we'd feel comfortable and welcome in the people who mean the most to us. I knew we'd have children someday and share the love we have to give. I knew we'd laugh and laugh until we can't breathe. Often. I knew we'd look to our parents' wonderful happy marriages as a source of inspiration and modeling. I knew the strong friendships each of us brought to the table would continue to aid us in becoming all we were meant to be and a support in our life together as a couple. I knew we'd embark on our walk of faith together, praying and learning together. I knew being together would always be a safe place to land.

Even though I was firmly confident in all of those things (I don't think I'd have walked down the aisle if all those pieces weren't in place), I knew parts of our story were at the hands of fate. To say yes to forever when you don't know what forever looks like is bold, it's daring, and yes, it's risky. I think because marriage is so common, we can tend to lose the absolute radicalness of the act of saying "I do," when the "do" is unknown. What exactly will be asked of you? Of him?  What is this relationship going to need to withstand?  It's a true (and worthy) leap of faith.

When I think back on the last 5 years, I think of so many of those things I knew "for sure" on July 12, 2014. I think of inside jokes, deep conversations, amazing experiences, fabulous evenings, and the merging of our separate lives to become "The Steeles." But I also think of some of the darker parts too. I think of snapping unnecessarily after a long day. I think of stupid fights, sharp words, letting the sun go down on anger. I think of mistakes, "I'm sorry's," and more than a few "You drive me crazy"comments (Part of being married, I think, means knowing that you are, indeed, sometimes a little crazy. Own it, he already knows).

But to me, the true testament to this past 5 years is a blending of both the good and the bad. It's never 100% perfect but it's us and we take the good and the bad. But we take it together. When I was in the hospital in 2016, trying desperately to keep our daughter growing inside me, and every day, every hour really, was truly life or death, I broke down. I tried so hard to be brave, but around AJ, I just let it all go and one day I unraveled and lost it while showering. I had gloves and plastic bags on my hands to cover all the IV's and keep them dry, and AJ came into the tiny hospital room shower, fully clothed, and washed my hair while I sobbed. That is marriage. That is what I hope in 5 more, 15 more, 55 more years from now, I will think of.

Life is a messy, beuatiful tornado of emotion, love and hurt, joy and pain, and moments that you wish you could fast forward and moments you wish you could freeze and swim around in forever. But through it, we stand strong in the mess, because really, life's about who you're with. And I'm so thankful we're with each other.

Cheers to 5 years of married life! We are celebrating this milestone this fall with a trip to Maui and we are so looking forward to it. And here's our first dance video because I'm just feeling so nostalgic today!

Life Lately (in captions)

Hip hip hooray! It's July! I'm sharing glimpses of our life lately with you today in caption form. Ready set, go!

We visited the Butterfly Biosphere with some friends

Curious about everything!
Hank had a good time! All the butterflies flying around sort of freaked me out but it was a fun experience!

I've been loving visiting different coffee shops this summer and I really like this new one Clever Bean in Draper. We stopped for some refreshments before a trail walk.

A stroller walk is one of my very favorite things in life

Hank checked out his first library books! The book worm/ teacher in me was very excited about this!

We celebrated my dad's birthday last week!

Look at these two twinning!

Hank enjoyed his after dinner ice cream cone!

Yum!

I haven't updated our couch pillows since we moved in about 4 years ago! I found these cute plaid ones at Hobby Lobby. Where, by the way, they had ALL THE FALL stuff out! I was in heaven!

Grandma and Grandpa joined us for a morning at the aquarium

Hank loves his grandparents

My guys

If June was the month of watching Coco, July seems to be about Leap. This movie is so cute and Hank and I have watched it twice this week!
4th of July.....our 3rd annual time at the Riverton Days breakfast

The (brand new!) Riverton PD was so nice and saw Hank checking out their bicycle, and said, "He can hop on it." Yes please. I know big sis Hadley would be so proud!

I ordered this cute lunchbox for my plane-lovin' boy!

This boy is a lounger....it cracks me up!

My mom and I went to see "Ma" this weekend! It was creepy but good!

I've been keeping busy with 7 full days of math class for my endorsement. It's not awful, and the content can be interesting but summer classes in any form are sort of blah!
I'll leave you with this picture because it combines 3 of my faves: Starbucks, Target, and Hank!

Happy summer!
